Sports

At Chelmsford County High School we believe sport plays a vital role in developing teamwork, leadership, resilience, and a lifelong commitment to health and well-being. Our sports programmes are designed to be inclusive, competitive, and enjoyable for all students, regardless of skill level. To encourage participation, we offer a wide range of sporting activities outside Core PE Lessons. These take place before school, at lunchtime, and after school. Students are frequently invited to represent our school at fixtures and events. While most of these take place after school, some occur during the school day or on weekends.

Our teams have a proud sporting tradition, regularly competing against local schools as well as at County, Regional or National level. Individual students are regularly selected to represent Essex, Eastern Region and England, particularly in Athletics, Cross Country, Hockey, Netball, Swimming and Volleyball.

Regular training sessions take place for:

  • Athletics (outdoor & Sports hall)
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Cricket
  • Football
  • Gymnastics
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Rounders
  • Swimming
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis

Occasionally sessions are organised in non-competitive sports, for example Aerobics, Boxercise or Yoga. Given the breadth of opportunities available, all pupils are actively encouraged to participate and engage in physical activity. Sporting activities are a mix of school run activities which are led by the PE department with help from senior students and courses run by qualified, external coaches. Where external coaches are uses the courses may incur a small fee.

Inter-house sports competitions feature strongly in the life of the school and include indoor athletics, swimming, benchball, football, cricket, badminton, basketball, netball, hockey and rounders.  The crescendo of these events is our annual Sports Day which takes place at CSAC, Melbourne.

With excellent facilities and a committed team of senior prefects, expert practitioners and coaches, we are proud to nurture both emerging talent and a love of physical activity in every student.

Dance

Our outstanding Dance Show forms a highly popular and prominent feature in the school Autumn calendar. Co-ordinated by the PE department, the dances are choreographed, taught and rehearsed by the Sixth Form Dance Officials allowing them to express their ideas and creativity, making their show unique to them.

Over 200 girls from all years participate in the dances in an eclectic mixture of styles from ballet and tap, to modern, hip-hop and Bollywood via jazz and Afrobeats; many exhibiting skills learnt outside school.

Leadership in Sport

At CCHS, we believe that sport offers more than physical development—it provides valuable opportunities for leadership, responsibility, and personal growth. Our structured Sports Leadership Programme allows students to take on key roles and actively contribute to the life of the PE department from Year 8 onwards.

PE Ambassadors (Year 8)

Students can apply to become PE Ambassadors from Year 8, acting as role models within lessons and promoting sport and physical activity across the school. Ambassadors help with equipment, support peers, and assist during sporting events and whole school activities such as Open evenings.

PE Prefects (Year 10)

Our Year 10 PE Prefects play a vital part in the running of school sport. They help supervise extracurricular clubs, assist staff with inter-house competitions, and mentor younger students. They pass on their knowledge and experience not only on how to improve in activities but how to balance academic & extra-curricular demands.

Sports Officials (Year 12)

Sixth Form Sports Officials take on a senior role in organising and delivering lunchtime activities, leading warm-ups, officiating games, and supporting the PE department in hosting major House events, as well as district and county-level competitions. They help organise the annual Sports Award evening which is a celebration of the year’s sporting achievements both individually and for teams.

These roles not only strengthen our sports provision but also help develop communication, leadership, and organisational skills—preparing students for future success both on and off the field.

Leadership in Dance

Dance at CCHS offers students a powerful platform for creativity, collaboration, and leadership. Our Dance Leadership Programme provides opportunities for students from Year 10 upwards to take on meaningful roles that contribute to the cultural life of the school and showcase their individual and collective talents.

Dance Officials (Year 12)

Year 12 students can apply to become Dance Officials, taking full responsibility for producing and directing our highly anticipated Autumn Term Dance Show. Renowned for its quality and originality, the show allows each group of Officials to craft a unique performance that reflects their own artistic vision and leadership.

Dance Ambassadors (Year 12 – New Role)

Introduced to broaden access to dance, Dance Ambassadors work closely with younger students in Years 7 and 8, delivering workshops and introducing them to a variety of dance genres. Their work culminates in performances across a range of platforms, including school assemblies, sports awards evenings, and seasonal festivals—bringing dance to the wider school community.

Dance Prefects (Year 10)

Year 10 students may apply to become Dance Prefects, working in partnership with both Dance Officials and Ambassadors. They play a vital role in assisting with the creation of the Dance Show while actively promoting dance through performances and peer-led sessions throughout the year.

This leadership pathway in Dance fosters independence, confidence, and teamwork, while celebrating the diversity and energy that dance brings to our school.

Sports Award Evening

Our annual Sports Award Evening, held every July, is a highlight of the school year—a night dedicated to recognising the dedication, talent, and achievements of our students and staff across all areas of sport.

Hosted by our Year 12 Sports Officials, the event celebrates not only individual and team successes, but also the hard work, leadership, and commitment shown by students throughout the year. The evening includes:

  • Presentation of Colours for outstanding contribution and commitment
  • Team Awards for excellence in performance, sportsmanship, and progress
  • Individual Trophies for leadership, effort, and sporting achievement
  • Recognition & acknowledgment of the invaluable support of our PE team and student leadership

This special evening brings our sporting community together—parents, staff, and students—to reflect on the year’s highlights and to inspire future participation and ambition.
