After months of preparation, the Year 11 Leadership Conference took place on 20th October 2017. The girls worked hard behind the scenes, selecting the food for breakfast and lunch; cake decorating and flower arranging, blowing-up balloons, decorating the Hall, dressing tables, and bringing the delegate packs together. All this could not have happened without the help and support of Miss Sales, Mrs French, Mrs Weakley, Mrs Sheldon, Year Leaders, Year 11 Tutors, members of the PA and parents.
The girls were honoured to listen to, question and network with our guest speakers: Sir Simon Fraser former Permanent Under-Secretary to the FCO, he now advises companies on Brexit, amongst other issues; former student Emma Boggis, Chief Executive of the Sports & Recreational Alliance, also former officer in the British Army, Deputy Ambassador in Madrid, Private Secretary to David Cameron and Head of the Olympic & Paralympic Legacy Unit supporting Lord Coe.
We were delighted that Heather Melville, OBE, CCMI, JP, Director for Strategic Partnerships and Head of Business Inclusion Initiatives for RBS, was able to speak to the girls again this year, she gave sound and encouraging advice, to have strong values and to focus ‘on what you can do really well’. The girls congratulated Heather on being awarded an OBE by HRH The Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace earlier in theweek.
Another favourite speaker to return was former student and Governor, Mitra Janes, Head of Diversity and Inclusion, DLA Piper UK LLP; who stressed that differences in people are to be valued, to keep positive, to encourage people around you, be a good communicator and embrace opportunities.
In the afternoon, girls ran their own workshops including; celebrating other cultures through food, language, music, dance; how society defines us, and how we perceive each other; solving problems through technological and scientific knowledge; and relaxation techniques, among many more.
