CCHS Recommends

Autumn Term 25/26

13th February 2026

This week CCHS recommends an Art podcast series. The Lonely Palette explores individual works of art, breaking down their history, context and exploring why they continue to matter. These podcasts are ideal for students or parents who want to deepen their understanding of major masterpieces and movements and of the way in which art speaks to such a variety of human experiences.

2nd February 2026

CCHS recommends ‘The News in Slow French’. This is a great podcast for all learners of French in Year 10 and above and the name says it all. Topical news stories (which you may already be a little familiar with in English) are narrated but in French which is slow enough to be more easily followed by a learner. There is also the option to increase the pace of the language as your understanding and confidence grows. One of the keys to learning a language is simply immersing yourself in it and absorbing things like accent and intonation as well as doing your best to follow the grammar, vocabulary and idiom. However often native French (or Spanish or German) is simply too fast for some us to access easily so clicking here to access last week’s episode in ‘slow French’  is highly recommended.

30th January 2026

We are pleased to recommend Tim Harford’s recent Royal Institution Lecture on women’s experiences in long distance running. Journalist, author and former grammar school pupil Tim Harford writes on economic issues for the Financial Times. In this talk, however, he turns his attention to the ways in which women have overcome the challenges to their participation in long distance running, focusing in particular on the example of the runner Kathrine Switzer. Switzer was the first woman to run in the Boston Marathon and blazed a trail for women in sport and women who were prepared to push other boundaries set for them.

Harford’s talk can be found here and lasts for 35 minutes.
