Parent Advisory

We are pleased to be able to offer our students a wide variety of books, both fiction and non-fiction. The books we choose to purchase for the library are bought for a number of reasons, whether they are essential classics, popular titles, much-loved authors, or suggestions from the students themselves.

We categorise all fiction books to the best of our abilities into four different suggested age ranges: Junior, Young Adult, Mature Young Adult, or Adult.

Junior: Suitable for all ages.
YA: Suitable for all ages, with slightly more mature themes or situations.
MYA: Suitable for Year 9 and above. May contain some more adult themes or language.
Adult: Suitable for Year 11 and above. May contain explicit language and adult themes.

The books have a coloured sticker on the spine to denote their age category, so that the students can easily identify appropriate books for their year group. Any student who wishes to borrow a book that is above their age must arrange for their parent to give consent by emailing library@cchs.co.uk. Certain texts, with adult and mature themes, are not available to students on the open bookshelves. These books, in line with the guidance above, require parental permission before being loaned to students. Should a student wish to access a book not available on the open shelves, they should ask a member of library staff.

We believe it is the responsibility of students and their families to be aware of the books that they are borrowing and of their own limitations, and to ask for guidance if necessary. In context to the aforementioned, students should not share books they have borrowed with other students. Books should only be read by those who have borrowed the book.

At CCHS we are proud of our students’ advanced reading abilities.  We do like to encourage them to progress with their reading and challenge themselves.

We would ask that you support your child in this decision-making by being aware of what they are borrowing from the library and advising them yourselves as to what you think is appropriate for them to be reading at home.
