Religious Studies -Sixth Form

Examination Board: Edexcel
Course No: AS 8560
Course No: A2 9560
    Why Study This Subject?

If you are interested in learning how to think, how to argue and how to respond to those fundamental questions that relate to life, then Religious Studies could be the challenge you are looking for.

At AS level students are encouraged to critically examine the impact philosophical thinking on religious issues has had on cultures, politics, moral issues and lifestyles.
Religious Studies combines well with other Humanities subjects and if taken with the sciences will give you a broad-based curriculum. Students who have studied Religious Studies in the past have gone on to read a wide range of subjects at university - everything from Physics to Philosophy, Economics to English, as well as Theology.
There are no prior knowledge requirements for AS and A level Religious Studies. However, the ability to debate, read widely and write informed essays are useful, if not essential!

        Course Content & Assessment

At both AS and A level, you will study two topics; the Philosophy of Religion and Ethics.

Philosophy themes will include arguments for and against the existence of God, the problem of evil, miracles, life after death and concepts of proof.

Ethical concepts are studied and applied to a variety of contemporary issues such as war, peace, sexual and medical ethics.

In Year 12 there will be two externally assessed examinations.

In Year 13 there are also two externally assessed papers; the first comprises questions from both the independent units studied throughout the year, the other is a controlled synoptic task containing questions based upon a published anthology that is studied in class.
