Aims of the Course
1) to encourage students to extend the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to communicate through music and take part in music making
2) to encourage students to engage in and extend their appreciation of the diverse and dynamic heritage of music
3) to develop the students' particular strengths and interests
4) to provide a course of study which broaches experience, develops imagination, fosters creativity and promotes personal and social development.
Scheme of Assessment
The AS course comprises 3 units:
- Performing
- Developing musical ideas
- Listening and Understanding
The level of AS is that expected after one year of post-GCSE study.
The A2 course represents a further year's post AS study, and comprises the three units of AS plus a further three units:
- Special options
- Performing and Composing
- Analysing music
The AS course would suit a competent performer (Grade 5 or above) wishing to keep a broader curriculum in Year 12, whilst developing further their transferable skills and qualities that universities and employers are eagerly looking for.
Students are recommended only to take Music AS level if they have an A * or A grade in GCSE Music.
