Chelmsford County High School for Girls
A foundation grammar school and specialist college
Subjects
Latin - Sixth Form
Aims of the Course & Reasons to Study this Subject
The Advanced Subsidiary and A2 Latin courses aim to provide an opportunity:
- to study elements of the language and literature of the classical world;
- to acquire some understanding of the culture, politics and social life of Rome at significant periods in its history.
- to utilise and build upon the language and literary skills practised at GCSE level.
A Level Latin is an engaging and satisfying subject in its own right and is an invaluable support to degree courses in English, History and Modern Languages. It is well regarded by admission tutors for Medicine and Law, since the precision of approach, linguistic basis for technical terms and the humanitarian element add a useful breadth to any A levels specified for the course. Its analytical and broad approach to study has also been found to provide a sound basis for courses and careers in Finance and Management.
Scheme of Assessment
The AS will form 50% of the assessment weighting of the full A Level and is designed to be taken at the end of the lower sixth year. Advanced Subsidiary is planned to be assessed at a standard between GCSE and A Level and will be able to be taken as a stand-alone qualification or as the first part of the full A level course.
At AS Level, candidates are assessed in:
- unseen translation (with the provision of a defined vocabulary)
- literature
At A Level, candidates add to their AS qualification
- unseen translation at a higher level
- further literature
- a choice of comprehension or prose composition.
There is no coursework element at either level.
