What is a GNVQ?

The GNVQ (General National Vocational Qualification) Full Award (Intermediate) is a nationally recognised qualification and is equivalent to four GCSEs in ICT.

The stated aims of the GNVQ course are to:

  • Use ICT for the presentation and manipulation of information.
  • Understand how ICT is used in industry, commerce and service sectors.
  • Learn about hardware and software which is needed to provide these services.
  • Acquire and apply essential skills to use ICT.
  • Develop an appreciation of the role of ICT in society as a whole.
What is the Thomas Telford course?

This is a nationally recognised course providing support for students following a GNVQ course in ICT.

  • The materials are designed to be used independently and have been successfully used in a wide range of schools, nationally.
  • All members of the school are licensed to use the materials in school, online or at home.
  • The course provides assignments which will help students prepare to carry out their own GNVQ project work.
General Course Features
  • The course has six units, two of which are assessed by examination and four of which are assessed by coursework portfolio.
  • The first examination will be in January 2002.
  • The course is supported by online learning materials provided by Thomas Telford, which is available on CD-ROM and the Internet. This guides students through tasks and assignments which prepare them for the final assessment.
Educational Benefits

With the increased emphasis on ICT in education, the GNVQ course provides a solid ICT foundation which will enable our students to make maximum use of educational opportunities at Key Stage 4, A Level and beyond.

Students will:

  • Have opportunities to make use of online learning materials in order to become independent learners
  • Develop skills and understanding in a wide range of ICT, as well use ICT as an effective tool in their studies of other subjects
  • Learn how ICT is used in the work place
  • Become knowledgeable and confident users of ICT
Accreditation:
  • We would expect all students to acquire the accreditation which is awarded at the end of the course by Edexcel.
  • Similar to music examinations, there is an accreditation fee.
  • The GNVQ is a nationally recognised qualification and is equivalent to four GCSEs in ICT.
