German - Sixth Form
Aims of the Course & Reasons to Study this Subject
The Sixth Form German Course is designed, not only to meet the requirements of the OCR examinations, but also to foster in the student a lively interest in the people, affairs and background of the German speaking countries. We are offering German at AS and Advanced Level.
Scheme of Assessment
The course will consist of practising all four skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, using, to a large extent, contemporary source material. The AS and Advanced Level courses will include such topics as Media, Advertising, Food and Drink, Sport and Travel. The AS Level examination will consist of three papers: Speaking, Listening/Reading, and Reading/Writing.
In addition, the 2 year A Level Course will cover areas such as social issues, the environment, education and news items. There will be a further 3 examinations in Speaking, Reading, Listening and Writing and a written paper on Culture and Society.
We strongly advise students to visit a German-speaking country for a period of two or three weeks during their Sixth Form Course. Last year students undertook Work Experience in Germany. Conversation classes in school are arranged with the Foreign Language Assistant on a regular basis.
The qualities which we look for in our students are enthusiasm and genuine commitment to the subject, so that girls may derive the maximum benefit and enjoyment from their studies. German is a language which has application in a wide variety of spheres and therefore lends itself readily to combination with a number of other subjects, both in the sciences and the humanities, in addition to its obvious value to those who intend to continue their language studies to a higher level.
It is expected that students applying for this course will have achieved an A* - B grade in GCSE German.
