Chelmsford County High School for Girls
A foundation grammar school and specialist college
Subjects
French - GCSE
This was a new examination course in 2001. It covers the 5 Contexts of the National Curriculum:
- Everyday Activities
- Personal and Social Life
- The World Around Us
- The World of Work
- The International World
The Syllabus aims to:
- develop students' ability to understand and communicate effectively in the target language (French)
- encourage students to acquire language learning skills
- encourage students to develop an understanding of the grammar and syntax of the target language
- encourage enjoyment, intellectual stimulation and provide a basis for further study.
Most of the testing will be in French but up to 20% of the answers in Listening & Reading Comprehension will be in English.
At present there is no coursework in French. The Speaking is internally assessed, taking place shortly before the main examinations. Dictionaries are not allowed in the examination.
Students will use Book 4 of the Avantage course and will continue to develop their skills in situations they might encounter in France or in contact with France and French people.
This course leads to the Advanced Level which is also topic-based and allows students to develop further the four attainment targets.
Students should be aware of the importance of studying one or more Modern Foreign Languages to GCSE and A Level. Many employers are now looking for people who are skilled in at least one foreign language and it is possible to combine study of a foreign language with virtually any other subject at University.
