Economics
Economics is a very popular choice at A level and students who have completed the course have described it as "fun, informative, interesting and very well organised".
People study Economics because they are interested in current affairs and they want to be informed about what is happening in our world. It also encourages analytical skills, an important attribute in our ever changing world.
AS Economics
All students will undertake study of the market system and market failure.
This looks at issues such as:
- Why are women paid less than men?
- Should workers receive a minimum wage?
- Why are firms allowed to pollute?
And a module on the national economy. This looks at issues such as:
- How can we help the unemployed?
- Does the Government lie in its statistics?
- What is inflation and is it bad?
There will be three examinations in the Year 12 from the topics listed above. This represents 50% of the A level course.
A2 Economics
The students who follow the A2 course will in addition look at topical issues such as:
- Economics in a European context, and all the aspects of the European community
- Transport economics eg. Should cars be charged to enter cities?
- Economics of development (eg. Third World countries)
There will be three examinations in the Year 13 from the topics listed above. There is no coursework and all examinations involve essay and data response questions.
