Art & Design - Africa Day 2004

On 8th July 2004, a special cross curricular day was arranged by staff at Chelmsford County High School aimed at providing all of the year nine students with a greater understanding of Africa.

Workshops included:

  • Aids and Aid: a workshop on the issues of Aid, with focus on Kenya, given by a guest speaker. The second part looked at the issues surrounding the AIDS/HIV illness in Africa.
  • Benin Sculpture: carving and clay workshop
  • Trade Rules: role play activity on the place of African countries on the world economy
  • Genocide in Africa: focus on religious divisions in Africa and the influence of Europeans in the 19th century which has led to racial unrest and violence
  • African Drumming: a musical workshop involving an African drumming group
  • Europe Meets Africa: examination of Europe's encounters with, and exploration of, Africa in the 15th and 16th centuries, followed by the changing relations between Europe and Africa from the late 19th century to the present day.
