New bus station opened
Friday, 12th January 2007
The new Chelmsford Bus Station will be opened by the Chairman of Essex County Council, Councillor Gerard McEwen, on Friday 12 January with buses to commence service from 14 January 2007.
The new bus station is a prestigious scheme offering state of the art real-time passenger information, on site travel shop, waiting facilities and customer retail facilities within close proximity to the railway station and town centre.
Over 45 bus services will operate from this bus station serving the people of Chelmsford and Essex.
An exciting public art scheme for Chelmsford's new bus station will also be unveiled displaying public works of art by Essex-born artist Martin Donlin with contributions from pupils from Chelmsford County High School and the Boswells School in Chelmsford.
Essex County Councillor, Rodney Bass, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation said: "The combination of innovative design, quality materials and the latest information systems sets the standard for new passenger transport facilities in the County.
"This project is an excellent example of partnership working between the public and private sectors for the benefit of local people. This development is one of the largest mixed use facilities: not only does it include the bus station and retail outlets, but also ultra-modern apartments and public open spaces."
Barratt is creating a new living quarter at 53 Park Central with 170 luxury one and two bedroom apartments and over 30,000 feet of retail space. At 13 storeys, the Tower will be one of the tallest buildings in Chelmsford and a landmark for the town.
The overall development has been funded by Essex County Council, CTP Ltd. and Barratt Eastern Counties, the £1.8m contribution from Essex County Council went towards the design and construction of the bus station. Work on site started in December 2004, with the demolition of the old bus station, construction of the new bus station then commenced in June 2005.
