A hundred years of achievement were celebrated at Chelmsford County High School for Girls this week as a special flag was unfurled to mark the school's centenary.

It was on June 20 1906 that well known local brewer and benefactor Edward North Buxton, Chairman of the Essex Education Committee, laid the foundation stone at the school in Broomfield Road, Chelmsford.

On Tuesday, exactly 100 years after that memorable event, the school's specially made centenary flag was raised over the buildings. It was unfurled by Tina Loganathan, at 11 the youngest pupil at CCHS, Mrs Mary Reeve, who joined the school in 1967 and is the longest serving teacher and David Bebb, longest serving governor and Chairman of the governors since 1999.

As David Bebb proudly watched the flag being raised, he said "Today we celebrate 100 wonderful years of exciting endeavour and achievement at this nationally acclaimed school which has launched several thousand careers and helped enrich so many lives."
