Study tips
- Recognise when your best learning time is and utilise this for the most challenging work.
- Working in fairly short bursts has been shown to be much more effective than in one long session. 40 to 55 minutes is probably optimal.
- Aim to read through each day's notes at the end of the day - every day, every note made in every lesson. Summarise the notes for a topic at the end of the topic.
- Keep these summaries to help revision.
- Use at least three information sources every time you have to find something out.
- Make notes every time you read something. Keep a little notebook in your pocket at all times to jot down things - ideas from the TV, friends conversations, bits from books etc.
- Make time for physical exercise. Plan this into your routine. Your brain will be filing away the work you have done without you knowing its happening while you swim/run/cycle/row. And you will feel great when you have done it. And you will stay fitter too.
- Teach or at least talk about what you are learning to someone else. To explain to someone else you must be clear in your own mind so it will really help you to understand.
- Eat well (lots of fruit, vegetables and water) and sleep well.
- Be organised - stationery, books, timetables, syllabuses.
- Enjoy your studies.
