School dictionaries
The school recommends that every student bring a dictionary to every lesson. This should be easily portable, durable and reasonably comprehensive. The very small "Gem" dictionaries are not really adequate. We recommend for everyday use:
- Collins "Express" Dictionary
- ISBN 0 00 719584 2
- There is a matching Collins "Express" Thesaurus
- ISBN 0 00 720879 0
For work at home, a really good dictionary and thesaurus would be a sensible investment for the future. The Oxford English Reference Dictionary is currently the best, with encyclopaedia entries as well as dictionary definitions. But any large dictionary would do - the bigger the better!
- The Oxford English Reference Dictionary (£35)
- ISBN 0 19 861057 2
The best thesaurus remains Roget, but it does take time and expertise to navigate. A more user-friendly option would be one of the A-Z versions - again, as large as possible. The Oxford Thesaurus is particularly good. The thesaurus function in Microsoft Office is less than helpful!
- The Oxford Thesaurus (£25)
- ISBN 0 19 860862
