The House System

The House system at Chelmsford County High School is an essential part of the school community and provides friendly but fierce competition for all to get involved in. Dating back to 1925, the long-lasting House legacy still stands strong today, though under slightly different names; originally four Houses existed named after governors of the school: Chancellor - Hulton - Pennefather - Tancock. Four Houses were then made three in 1986 and renamed C, H and S – standing for Chelmsford High School. Only recently, in September 1996 G House was introduced owing to the increase of students on roll, extraordinarily winning the House Shield eight times in the short fifteen years of its existence. Now in 2011 the House have been renamed again, this time after inspirational women:- Curie, Grey-Thompson, Hepburn and Stewart.

New entrants to the Sixth Form and teachers are also allocated to a House and join in with great enthusiasm in the endeavour to lead their house to victory.

Lexi Ferguson, Year 12 comments "The House system is a way of uniting students of all years- whether you are in C, G, H or S, you'll find bonds with girls older or younger than you that you never knew you could have.Whether your talents lie in sport, music or art, there's a place for everyone inside every House, and once you've found it, the moments you won't forget for the rest of your life will begin. Most importantly, in every House, you are always amongst friends"

Competitions form an important part of the House system and points are collected throughout the years in exciting House events such as House Pancakes, House Show, House Decorated Classroom and House Karaoke. There are also several House events that include sports, such as House Winter Games and Sports Day. Come December, the 'judgement day' arrives and the House with the most accumulated points wins the House Shield.

One of the most favoured House events of the year is undoubtedly House Cakes. Every year new inventions are created, ranging from decorated fairy cakes to the extreme giant sculptures of teachers or the school logo. This year there were 377 cakes, beating last year’s record by 6 cakes!

In fourth place was the text book cake by Claudia Rothman 9G.

She commented, “it took me about three hours to make and I am honoured that my cake was chosen to be in the final four”.

The cake in third place was made by Helen Potter, 12H. It consisted of an extremely well constructed globe and undoubtedly must have taken a lot of effort to create. Olivia Sparham 7H, created the file paper cake which came runner up. It took her four days and she thoroughly enjoyed creating it as making cakes is her hobby.

In first place was a shockingly accurate tiered cake called ‘the life cycle of a CCHS student’, each layer representing each year, made by Bethany Wickington 11S. Overall, H won, followed by G, C and then S. Many congratulations are to be given for the effort that the whole school puts in, this spirit will certainly be shown in further House events to come.
